Analysis of soil life
The project AI analysis video Klaverbank focuses on automatic recognition and quantification of animals on the seabed.
The Netherlands must regularly report on the state of underwater nature in the North Sea, for example for the Marine Framework Directive and OSPAR. Every three years, video images are made of the soil life on the Klaverbank. This monitoring makes it possible to systematically follow the development of soil life on the Klaverbank.
In this project, we will use artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a tool that can automatically recognize and count soil animals present in the video images. It starts with recognizing common taxa.. This allows the expert to focus on the special, non-common species. It is expected that this will improve the quality and reduce the analysis time.
It also creates the possibility to re-analyze entire measurement series quickly and cheaply, so that all data collected is 1 to 1 comparable, regardless of the collection date or expert who performs the analyses. Manually, this would be prohibitively expensive.
