A day full of energy, questions, insights and the joint ambition to make AI really valuable for water management in the Netherlands. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A shared task: applying AI in the main water system<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The morning started with presentations by Rijkswaterstaat, KNMI, Deltares, TU Delft and FloodWaive. The contributions showed that the technology \u2013 Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) \u2013 is available. But the real challenge lies in its application within the main water system.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Classic hydrodynamic models are powerful, but slow. A single model for the North Sea now sometimes requires five hours of calculation time. An ML model can do that in less than a minute. This brings real-time scenario analysis into the picture. But how do we put such fast models into practice responsibly?    <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions that matter<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the morning, a number of central questions were central, including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do we link user questions (\u201cuser stories\u201d) to technical use cases?<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we ensure that ML models can address a variety of water management problems?<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does operationalizing AI models mean for management and maintenance?<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we guarantee explainability and confidence in the results?<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What role do data, infrastructure and governance play in the transition?<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And how can we make co-creation with partners sustainable?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These questions came not only from the speakers, but also in lively discussions with participants. Critical questions were asked about topics such as bias in training data, the reliability of wave spectra, the translation of extreme into daily conditions and the role of public and private parties in the development and ownership of models. Which software components are suitable for having ML models delivered? <br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Algorithms &amp; models:<\/strong> What is needed to scale up this technology and embed it sustainably in work processes?<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Governance &amp; communication:<\/strong> How do we ensure explainability, trust, accountability and good decision-making?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a short introduction, there was plenty of discussion about (im)possibilities, opportunities and threats, with the focus on how to optimally include these matters in the RWS AI modelling programme. After a short plenary feedback of these sessions, Annette Zijderveld outlined the outlook for the RWS programme and the way in which cooperation (both in terms of content and procedural) with the partners present can be shaped during the process. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1152\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digishape.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/25-05-27-Digishape-dag-sessie-edited.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digishape.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/25-05-27-Digishape-dag-sessie-edited.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.digishape.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/25-05-27-Digishape-dag-sessie-edited-500x281.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/www.digishape.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/25-05-27-Digishape-dag-sessie-edited-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.digishape.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/25-05-27-Digishape-dag-sessie-edited-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.digishape.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/25-05-27-Digishape-dag-sessie-edited-1536x864.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy, diversity and ownership<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the organizers, it was \u201ca successful day with a lot of energy, content and solution-oriented discussions.\u201d The evaluation also showed a positive picture: <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cNice meeting people with different backgrounds.\u201d<\/em><em><br\/><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cA nice balance between market, government and knowledge institutions.\u201d<\/em><em><br\/><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe open character and the short pitches worked well.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And now?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The promise of fast, flexible, and explainable AI models for water management is in the air. But this is only possible if we continue to work together \u2013 across domains, disciplines and sectors. In the coming months, DigiShape, Rijkswaterstaat and partners will work together on the further elaboration of the programme, with room for input from all stakeholders.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a formal start of the programme in the summer, the core group will formulate assignments and tasks for the various work packages and implement them together with the partners.
